Mario Kart DS is a racing game where the player races in a kart against other racers as one of eight characters, each with three karts to choose from. While racing or battling, the Nintendo DS’s top screen delivers a third-person perspective of the participant’s kart, while the base touchscreen shows that the race’s current standings, things carried by each racer, and a map of this course. The base screen can be toggled to display either an overview of the whole course, or even a bird’s-eye view of the participant’s kart and the immediate area, including neighboring racers, course risks, object boxes, and incoming attacks. Each course features thing boxes which the player can drive through to obtain a randomly selected item, which the player can utilize to get an advantage over other racers. Some things allow the participant to attack other racers to slow them down, although other items can be utilized to hasten the participant’s kart to pass other racers more readily.

The Grand Prix and also Vs modes demand that the participant choose an engine course from among 50 cc, 100 cc, and 150 cc. The classes serve as problem levels–the greater the engine course, the faster each of karts go. Furthermore, a more Mirror mode could be unlocked, where karts use 150 cc motors and monitors are horizontally reversed (like signs and lettering within the original orientation).

In Grand Prix mode, the player competes against seven computer-controlled racers in a string of courses that are predetermined. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, that featured four cups, Mario Kart DS comprises eight cups: Mushroom, Flower, Star, Particular, Shell, Banana, Leaf and Lightning, together with the latter 4 cups consisting entirely of tracks derived from prior entries in the Mario Kart series. Each cup has four monitors, for a total of 32. When a cup has been finished, a rating will be awarded based on the times and places, ranging from E to A, then to 1, two or three stars. Like in Double Dash, players get points for every finishing position.

In Time Trial mode, the player has to finish a course as quickly as you can by using 1, 2 or 3 mushrooms (based on which kart can be used). The fastest time is then saved as a ghost, as a duplicate of the player’s functionality, which the player can race later.

In V.S. mode, the player races onto a track of their choosing against computer-controlled opponents or in local multiplayer. The style can be played individually or in groups, which divides racers into a blue group and a red staff; at multiplayer, players can control which team they’re placed on. In addition, the amount of races scoring system can also be altered.

Fight mode features two game modes, Balloon Battle and Shine Runners, both that also allow the player to play either individually or in teams.

In Balloon Battle, the player must pop the ring of those players by assaulting themor else they are able to steal balloons by fostering into other karts. Each player begins the conflict with 1 balloon. These could be re-inflated around 4 times. In multiplayer, even if a person player loses most of his/her balloons, he/she is out of the game and turns into a ghost. As a ghost, a participant can simply place thing boxes. If the conflict is played in single player, then the match ends and the results are announced if all of the individual player’s balloons are popped.
