We’re eating out at our own brains to present our verdicts on some of PC gaming’s most beloved series, such as Black Souls and Mass Effect.

As the series that observed the survival horror genre, Resident Evil has attempted to sustain its grip on the elusive zombie shooting crown as its beginning in 1996. Suffice it to sayResident Evil has not maintained an enthusiastic, continuous rule over the genre, hammering further off into odd, cultured lore dumps and Matrix-worthy activity sequences as the series grew in ambition and scope. Through reinvention after reinvention, Resident Evil games might not always be fantastic, but they have always been interesting, curious objects. And it is because of that wild experimentation which Resident Evil still has a firm grip on us, redefining the genre and also forcing the entirety of match style to respond–hell, Dead Space was going to be System Shock 3 earlier Resident Evil 4 came out.

Samuel: This is one bad fanfiction thought turned into a disastrously boring shooter. Played alone, the friendly AI is awful, the links into Resident Evil 2 are tenuous and your squad of faceless nobodies goes in the bin. Junk. The remake of Resi 2 pretty much allows me to forget this forever.

James: This game does not need to be this low on the record. This could have been avoided. During several preview events PC Gamer’s Tom Marks expressed genuine interest in Umbrella Corps within an interesting competitive shooter which didn’t lazily presume the competitive deathmatch template and throw it at a sparse Resident Evil diegesis. Zombies roam each map, and they do not strike you , but by disabling other gamers’ magical zombie repellant devices, you can send out the horde after thema novel idea, I think. But for god’s sake, the PC model started with mouse controllers which were directly up broken. About the PC, that is a massive chunk of your userbase, and for many players, unforgivable.

Resident Evil 6

James: Fuck this match. And it did. The campaigns themselves are varied and fairly from afar, and playing characters from all around the crap Resi timeline is some kind of cool, however the controls intestine everything good about RE’s over-the-shoulder style ethos that functioned so well in 5 and 4.

It is so terrible a half-measure the slightest potential for feeling unease is rendered inert. Samuel: I take it’s a bloated game, and the Chris campaign is particularly bad, but its battle –once you understand the full spread of skills available to youpersonally, which the game does a pretty terrible job of teaching–offers a great deal of scope for participant expression and fun acrobatics. Problem is, nobody actually desired a Resident Evil game to become about these matters, so that I understand the criticism Resi 6 obtained. I have a particular fondness for its Mercenaries mode, however, and wrote about it some time ago. A reboot required to occur after this.

James: Revelations was most potent on the Nintendo 3DS, but discounted on the PC years after the truth, not having novelty renders out its shortcomings in the open. The environments feel empty, small, and static. Enemies are simple-minded and appear in smaller classes than Resi 5 or 4, which turns battle into a romantic event, sure, but without the crushing threat of numbers, experiences rely more on surprise than stress.

It will not help that Revelations’ opening minutes occur on a shore where your very first danger arrives in the form of beached fish blobs. Survival horror. Revelations isn’t a dreadful Resident Evil game by any means, but an extremely rote and controlled one, especially on the PC.

Samuel: It felt like an attempt to unite the design principles of old Resident Evil with Resi 4 controls, and yeah, its handheld roots are obvious. For completionists, it is nice that this made its way into PC, but it’s certainly no one’s favourite entry in the set.

Resident Evil Zero

James: Resi Zero was actually my first Resident Evil game. It greatest power is nailing the trademark tension and helplessness of the string, tank controllers included. Changing between Rebecca and Billy divides the stunt survivalist pressure further, and I dig up the opening train scene because of its suffocating, slow introduction to the new characters and intense, timed finale.

However, when I try to remember nearly anything else about the game, I go clean. There is another mansion, some levers, and more zombies as anticipated, but this time they’re riddled with gigantic leech creatures. In 2017, the zeitgeist has since moved on from leeches within an immutably horrifying concept. They’re slimy and dark and little –get it over. It’s a fantastic Resident Evil game, however, far in the very memorable or distinct.

TimI instantly disliked Billy. Between his session artist haircut and awful tribal tattoo, then he wasn’t the sort of hero you warmed to. The condemned war criminal history (he’s a marine styled for failing to conduct a massacre) was not exactly relatable possibly, but then that’s hardly been Resi’s forte. I also remember Resi 0 being the my closing point of departure with anything such as a clasp to the Umbrella meta plot. Like, why is Dr Marcus maintaining all those leeches his skirt up?

Still, the character-switching between Billy and Rebecca added a thing to the vexing, and the first setting was pleasantly claustrophobic, in a Horror Express kind of way. Alas, the fact that the game afterwards decamped to a more traditional haunted home, which I have now almost completely forgotten, only underlines Zero’s unremarkable status as sawdust from the Resident Evil sausage.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Tim: my incipient dementia means I am fighting to remember some of them, but I do remember at the time believing this might be my favourite Resi, only because it gave Jill Valentine an assault rifle to start with. (I should caveat that by saying only in case you decide on easy mode, which apparently younger me did.) Whatever the case, being able to go weapons free to the coffin dodgers from the beginning was pleasant relief if, like me, you had chosen to micromanaging ammunition reserves to a doctoral degree. Invariably, I’d finished the previous two Resi games using a list stocked filled with every type of round in the game, just to discover that besting the last boss didn’t require half .

Resi 3 additionally gave us its eponymous antagonist, the unkillable Nemesis that would stone up at inopportune moments as you researched, frightening players using its own poor dental work and also gauche flavor in gentlemen’s outerwear. Upon entrance, the Nemesis would normally hiss”STAAAAAARS”, presumably identifying the prey that it was programmed to track, but maybe also whining about the caliber of actor he would be expected to share screen time with at the 2004 movie Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Joe: Once playing the original Silent Hill in early 1999, I moved into Resident Evil 3 with a degree of misplaced confidence. Against the Resi series’ B-movie-like framing, Harry Mason’s debut outing offered a different type of terror because this was the very first appropriate psychological horror game I’d ever playedwith. Dealing with twisted and witty personalities that looked much worse compared to Wesker and Birkin, shifting between other dimensions, and putting waste into a number of its gut-wrenching directors actually affected mepersonally, and finally caught me off-guard. This, clearly, was not the case in Resident Evil 3. For the first time, enemies–specifically Nemesis–could follow you into new regions in an attempt to continue the hunt. In the event of Nemesis, it’d burst through doors and gates with such power I swear the animations gave me nightmares hours later playing. Sure, Jill was armed with an assault rifle from the off–but that only meant she had been expected to use it. 1 easy change to this Resi formula unexpectedly made the next series entry one of the scariest horror games I had ever played at the moment, and left me with one of my fondest, scariest videogame memories to this day.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2

James: Revelations 2 is the most underrated game from the show, readily. It embraces Resi 4’s overwhelming combat situations and expressive arsenal, and then chucks it in a B-movie Resi best-of on a wacky, bizarre prison island. Better yet, the co-op play requires genuine collaboration, pairing off a conventional, fully equipped classic RE character, Claire Redfield and Barry Burton, with a far more helpless spouse –a teenager and a child. Tim: A very important entry in this set. Expanding from the first’s home setting to take in the true zombie apocalypse happening in Raccoon City is smart, if evident. Samuel: 21 years later, this movie evokes nostalgia for Resi two locations and characters, but feels like a totally new game. What a deal with. The zombies are appropriately dreadful, too. This feels like some of the best bits of the contemporary third-person Resident Evil entrances, with scary moments to the standard of Resident Evil 7. It will make you wonder which of the older entries will get the remake treatment next.

Ultimately, since we scored it one point fewer than Resident Evil 7, then it technically belongs just below it with this list.

Andy K: What makes this special is the way that it combines the slow, challenging survival horror of these traditional games with the intense over-the-shoulder combat of RE4. There could have been a disconnect there, however, Capcom really nailed it. RE4 still has it beat when it comes to supervisors, variety, and weapons, but as a pure distillation of what makes the older design of Resident Evil great, you couldn’t ask for more.

I also like how it is not a slave to the source material, giving old locations and experiences a fresh spin. As Samuel says, it feels like a brand new game: modern and thrilling, however hitting the very same beats since the 1998 original. I believed it a point lower than RE7 because the Tyrant chases feel under-developed, and it is not quite as subversive or surprising, but it’s pretty much among the best games in the series, and I would love more remakes in the identical style.
